Selenite is an abundant type of gypsum, found in caves deep within the earths mineral canvas. The largest live collection of selenite resides in the Cave of Crystal, buried 984 feet (300 meters) beneath the Sierra de Naica Mountain in Chihuahua, Mexico. The crystals inside the cave are anchored to the walls and floor and have experienced at least half a million years of uninterrupted growth. The cave is inhabitable, as it sits on a bed of magma.
